Smart Irrigation Controllers

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
Local irrigation installation business, A1 Irrigation, is installing Smart Irrigation Controllers with most of its new irrigation systems.  Many residents are also requesting upgrades to their older installations, to take advantage of the water savings these new controllers bring.

During COVID whilst many people are working from home, they are looking out at their garden and planning upgrades and landscaping.  This is a great time to contact Joe Fahim at A1 Irrigation to look at your project.  You can call Joe on 0416 104 660 or email [email protected]

Smart Irrigation Controllers

Smart Controllers which operate residential and commercial irrigation systems use cutting edge technology.  They utilise weather data to plan and control water usage and watering times, they can be connected to the internet to provide real time data to the property owner.  Different zones can be set up for different types of plants with differing water requirements.  Different zones are set up for drip irrigation areas and sprinkler areas, catering for garden beds and lawns. It sounds complicated, but it’s not.  The installation cost of a Smart system isn’t much different to the standard installation system.

Utilising this technology saves the property owner money in the long term and it saves water and enables your plants to thrive.  No longer do you have to return from holiday to find parched plants and dying lawns due to high temperatures.

Smart ControllersHow does an Irrigation Smart Controller work?

It works by automatically turning your watering up and down according to weather triggers you input into the controller.  This is great for saving water and, if you input the right triggers, should also make your garden even healthier. After installation, our expert installers will check your garden from time to time to ensure everything is working well.

Smart irrigation controllers include an online access portal that you can access on your computer or via an app on your smart phone or tablet, allowing you to easily adjust your irrigation from anywhere in the world!  Some smart irrigation controllers also include flow meters and other smart technology that will alert you of any leaks in your irrigation system.

There are varying levels of ‘smartness’ in smart irrigation controllers that our expert installers will walk you through.  It’s up to you how much or how little you want to know and control.

A smart irrigation controller reads online weather data and responds via pre-set weather triggers. These triggers are set by our experts via an online web portal or app. Here are a couple of example triggers:

  • Turn off irrigation when it rains over 10mm
  • Decrease irrigation by 50% when it rains over 5mm
  • Increase irrigation if forecast temperature is over 35 degrees
  • Suspend watering if wind speeds over 50km/hr are forecast

What are the benefits of a smart irrigation controllers?

As we all become busier in our daily lives, technology such as Smart irrigation controllers can help intelligently automate what can sometimes be a confusing and complicated task. Rather than adjusting our irrigation on a weekly, fortnightly, bi-annual or just annual basis, smart controllers will automatically adjust every day based on localised weather information (primarily rainfall, temperature, wind and evaporation).  This will reduce water use by at least 20% which will save you money!

Whilst it is easy to see the effects of under-watering, it is often not so easy to see the effects of over-watering.  Yet the negative effects can be just as detrimental to your garden with shallow rooted plants and the continual run-off means wasted water and nutrients down the drain.

Smart irrigation controllers have additional capabilities such as flow monitoring, zone shutdown and email/SMS alerts for leaks and broken pipes (great for those night time irrigation faults that can go unnoticed). There are also faulty wiring alerts for valve malfunctions which are a common cause of hard to find leaks within irrigation systems.
